The Official Influence Guide

What is Influence?

Influence is the official “currency” of the site, reflecting your character’s experience and social currency in the Imperium. This is separate from whatever in-character wealth that your character may have.

What is it used for?

Currently, it is used mostly for improving skills to the soft cap and then to the hard cap under the character skill system. Each skill point under and up to and including the soft cap of twenty requires 5,000 influence per point, each point after the soft cap until the hard cap requires 10,000 influence per point. Later on, it will be used to do things like buy one’s way up the nobility ladder, get special customized ones from the Ministry of Innovation or elsewhere, and other things.

How do I gain Influence?

While influence is generally awarded by posting scaled by how long one’s posts are (there is no way to “win” this, you can make a lot of smaller posts, or more frequent smaller ones), it can also be granted by Ministers for performing certain tasks, for participating in key threads or events, and for other special occasions.

Is Influence intended to be a big grind?

No, it is not intended to be a particularly large grind. To get a character from the initial skill point limit to the soft cap is intended to take around fifty hours worth of writing depending on one’s writing speed, and then another forty hours to reach the hard cap. So essentially one moderately sized roleplaying game to reach each cap, or one large roleplaying game to max out a character to the hard cap. This can be sped up to a large degree by the above exceptions, and the VI is a more long-term and cooperative environment over one heavily focused on PVP, so do not feel rushed to hit the skill cap immediately.

Can I transfer influence between my characters?

Yes, subject to Minister approval, you can transfer influence between characters. This is to encourage people to continue writing their capped characters and to not see that as the end of their journey and to help speed along the development of alts. The only thing you cannot do is send it to another player.

Where do I check my Influence and how do I send it to my other characters?
