The Official New Player Guide and FAQ
What is the Vulpine Imperium?
The Vulpine Imperium is an anthropomorphic (“furry”) WRPG (writing roleplaying game), originally founded in 2003, but rebooted in 2024 after the original site went down by @Talinn Ryalor , former Minister (moderator) of the site who is now the current head administrator. It is set in fantasy Age of Sail setting extremely loosely connected to the Redwall series of books (though knowledge of these are not required at all) just beginning to move into the steam age in general, although there are some technological nuances here and there to ease roleplaying and for balance purposes that will be made clear if you decide to join.
Is this site safe for work? Is there an age restriction? If my kid joins the site, will they be safe?
It is 100% safe for work, rated at the PG-13 level (and always will be), and this rule is taken extremely seriously on both the official website and the Discord server. Presently, the minimum age to join is 13. Minors will be perfectly safe on the site and the official Discord server and we have several parents in our community to look out for them, but, of course, do give them general guidelines on how to be safe online, and realize that it is impossible for us to police off-site direct messages on Discord (we can only police what happens in the server), though if we learn about any shenanigans, we will be ban the offending party on the first offense and report them to the proper authorities posthaste.
This seems interesting, what are the essential things I need to read to get started?
Check out the following stuff, in this order:
(1) The Official Site and Roleplaying Rules
(2) Roleplaying Dispute Resolution on the VI
(3) Meta Rules, Questions, and Concerns
(4) Timeline of the Vulpine Imperium
(5) The Official Character Creation Guide
(6) How to make and use Discord
Not strictly essential, but very helpful:
(1) Official Lore Topics
(2) Guides
(3) Player Lore Creation
This seems a little overwhelming and I feel like I need help, where should I go?
The official Discord Server is where you can usually get real-time help and advice on how to get started on the VI, although you can, of course, directly message the head administrator or various staff members.
Where should I get started once I've made my character?
The head administrator suggests that you have at least one character capable of joining the various ships of the Navy on adventures, and one character who can go off and about on land, although these are not mutually exclusive. This is just so if a particular naval adventure gets extended a bit beyond what staff has initially planned, you can still do stuff on shore and vice versa, although the timeline is pretty flexible and this should not happen frequently with recent internal plot guideline reforms.
You said the timeline was flexible above, what does that mean exactly?
For the most part the site tends to shy away from hard dates for things except within the general season or year (although for your own internal consistency and timeline you can keep track for yourself), instead being between major site events, and staff generally does not look too hard or crack down on minor timeline inconsistencies. You can look at the official timeline thread linked above to get a general idea of things, it will be updated as necessary.
I have noticed that some characters are in factions, where do I go to learn about them, and how do I join?
You can find out more information about the various Imperium official factions here. They are not quite yet fully implemented yet, but there has been some roleplaying in a few of them. Ideally, to join and start playing, you want to contact the Minister listed here for further information.
