Ministry of Commerce
The MinoComm, or Ministry of Commerce, Finance, Trade, and Business, is located in the rebuilt Hrumvet Hooper Building, a large and beautiful edifice that's 10% offices, 30% presses, and 70% vaults. The Ministry deals primarily with matters of tax collection, imports, exports, private enterprise, funding, and the stock market. Money greases many a wheel – and a paw – in the Imperium.
In dealing with the apportioning of funds for just about anything within the Imperium, the MinoComm maintains close ties to all other Ministries by dint of financial necessity. Needless to say whilst the Ministry may be reasonably small after historical calamity, its grubby little paws seem to be in every pie on the sill. This is not to say everything is smooth sailing, for jurisdiction can become muddy: for example, Commerce has historically squabbled with the Ministry of Misanthropy for control of funds accrued from gambling.
Employment
It is often said that the majority of the MinoComm's employees cannot count, but there is very little proof of this, as the average Smelt reporter cannot, themselves, count.
Commerce hires an assortment of beasts from accountants to tax officials, port trade inspectors, and those capable of drawing up legal documents relating to trade and business. Commerce also employs diplomatic beasts with good financial sense to oversee any inter-Ministry financial agreements (or disagreements), ensure domestic trade runs smoothly, and monitor, adapt or forge new foreign trade agreements outside of the Imperium.
Access to Commerce’s vaults are restricted to the Minister and several well-trusted Masters of the Vaults (the role itself spread to several individuals due to their propensity towards both death by assassination and a historical habit for misplacing keys after a good night out). The deepest vaults require all Masters present as a failsafe. Rumours abound that there is a failsafe past this involving crabs of terrifying size, but this has never been proven.
Factions
Commerce works in tandem with two factions:
The Kreehold Mercenaries. Recently revived from their umpteenth dormant state, the Kreehold operates under direct control of the Ministry of Commerce to handle inter-Ministry dealings (or, indeed, private hire). These services range from mediation to hired muscle; sabotage to bounty-hunting to armed escort, all handled with discretion and, supposedly, an objective paw. Considering that money buys service, this may be disputed.
The Furotazzi Family. Functioning as their own independent organisation, ‘Tazzis are hired on need-to-know terms by the Ministry of Commerce for need-to-know functions. For example, Commerce will turn a blind eye to some of the ‘Tazzis shadier operations to secure reliable, quality work in the tax collection sector.
