History
Mariel doesn't remember much of her childhood. Aside from sparse memories of hunger or struggling in improvised shelter awaiting her mother. Those memories however soon give way to living in poverty but at least not struggling to stay alive. And one person that make it possible was Naika. Mariel sees her as a mother and doesn't know that Naika is her actual sister. As such, she associates with her all of motherly love and care. Naika was the main reason Mariel was alive and even in the darkest hours, Mariel was given everything Naika could give.

But with time, as Mariel grew, situation changed. First getting to eat well and get proper medicine, then getting to live in a real building. Getting a room on the attic of Naika's trading house. Soon later getting admitted to school and then moving to a real home. Mariel wasn't dumb and Naika didn't hide it much from her. She knew that all of this wealth came from her mother doing very illegal stuff. That said, she didn't complain. Mostly because Naika painted into her a picture of discrimination.

To Mariel, foxes killed her mother's (Naika's) father. Her own father left her before birth. That was the story she was told and that was why she developed such a distrust for both of those. Being a child, she didn't know any better and knowing what Naika did for her only assured her in her words. This was a cruel world and likes of her needed to fight for their place. Naika did what she could. Mariel wasn't going to waste it.

So she worked hard, excelled at school and took to learning history. In part because she loved learning stuff but also she wanted to see and know the truth about everything. History however had one flaw, it was at times very boring. So she developed a taste for any fantastical tale she could get her paws on. Then spending her time retelling them to other kids with ease. At times even using her knowledge to entwine facts with fiction and create her own stories from it. She was quite popular with those and liked among her peers.

But it also made her want to live such fantastical life. She started to find many things boring. And while she didn't have guts to do something extreme as her mother did, she wasn't shy of doing some pickpocketing just for fun. Especially as she also did feel it was justified. Her ever protective yet loving mom even taught her a few things about it, all while also showing her how to protect herself and even giving her a dagger and a bit of volatile poison to use in an emergency.

Mariel was but a kitten, yet one filled with disdain and love, pain and hope, curiosity and narrow-minded. Most importantly however, one in search for adventures to quench her ever growing need for excitement.
