Kaii sat on the stool he brought himself to the cot. He wasn't shy of prolonged standing but he found it was easier to bare the more violent movements of the sea while sitting. And as it was his another day with barely any sleep, his sense of balance wasn't the greatest.

Sleeping was a hard topic for Kaii. He just couldn't do it like most beast could. Not due to nightmares or fear, he managed to quell those a long time ago. His problem was inability to stop his mind from working. That is why he spent long nights designing, calculating, trying to figure out more and more of the secrets of the universe. More specifically, due to circumstances, precisely copy the engine he saw.

Copy was actually a bad word. He had respect for those who originally figured it out... He simply saw the flaws they possibly didn't. Also, all great inventions were always starting at the most infant stage. It was duty of those that came after to improve upon those and bring them to perfection... or create something new and great based on those.

Kaii was however struggling with this. Mostly, because unlike most, he never got formal education in the matter. His education ended at what most would consider rudimentary basics needed to attend the university without hefty bribe. It was a bit harder to do science when you had to yourself discover most of it. Fortunately some practical experience and few too many unauthorized ventures to the libraries were enough to teach himself all he couldn't figure out on his own.

He was almost happy for it though. It felt more rewarding in a way. And gave him something to do at endless nights devoid of sleeping.

It also meant he was often suffering with headaches, just like now.

Unable to proceed with thinking, he decided it would be worth taking a break. Stretching himself with a yawn, Kaii put on his finest outfit, mostly to boost up his own mood, before leaving for the main deck. It was a hard journey, one that rewarded him with quiet of the night and cold air soothing some of his pain. Adjusting for the darkness took a second but even for a fox, he was slightly above average with seeing in the dark.

But looking up at stars only worsened his migraine. He started pondering how do they work? What are they? Why are they there? Such questions were not in his expertise but... they still fascinated him. And reminded him of his little sister at the same time. She was one interested far more in theory of how things work. He prefered to get his paws dirty and dabble with the physical matters.

Remembering her wasn't something he was prepared for. Migraine and overall tiredness were already a heavy burden. Kaii slumped under the mast and involutarily started sobbing. A moment of weakness he couldn't stop no matter what. The pain of the loss came back to him again, breaking through countless walls that he had raised over time.

His mind brought him to one and only revelation, one that far too often came in moments as such. Insignificance, being replacable, inefficient and prone to breaks. He wouldn't dare to admit it, but he knew well he was but a tiny cog in this machine called the world.

And that idea brought his mood lower and lower. Leaving him in tears in the middle of the deck with no ability to care for everyone on it... Probably not single person would care anyway. Such was the world and he knew it.

He forgot however that by all means he was supposed to man the engine right now...
