The VI Discord Guide: Why you should use it, and how to safely do so.

What is Discord?

Discord is a popular social media messaging service that can be used on a variety of devices. It can be used via an application on the phone or the PC, or, failing that, even simply a web browser.

Why should I use Discord?

The Vulpine Imperium uses for various purposes such as general socializing, community discussion, roleplay planning, and other such things. While not strictly required, it is highly suggested that one join the official Discord. This is because the Vulpine Imperium uses for various purposes such as general socializing, community discussion, roleplay planning, and other such things.

What is the VI Discord link?

How do I sign up on Discord?

Go to https://discord.com/ and follow the instructions.

I don’t want to give Discord my true email or phone number! What do you recommend?

The head administrator advises one to use Proton Mail for the best compromise between security and privacy for a relatively normal and sane individual. You do not have to give Discord your phone number, and can simply use this instead. All emails are strictly E2EE encrypted and Switzerland is pretty good privacy wise, but not the IP addresses, use the below if you are even more paranoid before logging in to your Proton account.

I don’t want Discord to know where I am/I live in an oppressive country that has banned Discord and/or furries! What should I do?

You can use what is called a virtual private network to bypass most restrictions. For one’s safety and privacy the head administrator recommends Mullvad as an easy, pretty good solution as it is a verified no-logs service with RAM-only servers in a country with good privacy laws and it can be made to work in the vast majority of nations with a bit of fine-tuning, especially using Mullvad Browser to remove browser fingerprinting. If you find this still does not work for your level of concern or if your country has actually banned Discord and/or other social media by law, Tails is a good, relatively easy to use amnesiac combined operating system + secure internet platform-simply read up on it and install it on a USB. Used properly (read through the guides on the website), even in the most oppressive countries (sans perhaps North Korea), it can be good enough to protect your privacy from mass surveillance. Simply log on via the web app to Discord if you are in one of these countries after properly following the guides above, then pull the USB when you are done.

Why does the VI not use Telegram which is very popular among furries?

Russian authorities have officially been given backdoor access to Telegram, and thus likely other such countries, and for the safety of anyone who wishes to join the VI from those countries, the head administrator cannot recommend this at all.

"Oleg Matveychev, deputy chairman of the State Duma’s Information Policy Committee, said at the time that Telegram and the FSB had reached a “compromise” in which Telegram installed infrastructure enabling authorities to monitor users."

Why does the VI not use Signal which is often hailed as a good alternative?

Although it is E2EE encrypted, it still requires giving a phone number which has been shown to have been breached in the past, and recent publications have indicated it is not as secure as previously believed.

Is Discord safe?

Discord does not use E2EE encryption except for voice and video calls as of this moment, but, generally speaking, has not been known to give over user data to oppressive regimes. For the purposes of the VI, in conjunction with a proper VPN (Mullvad), or, if you are in a very oppressive country, Tails, you should be fine. That being said, I would not recommend giving out particularly sensitive information on Discord if you live in certain countries.

I still do not want a Discord, are there any alternatives the site will be looking into?

A site chatbox will, at some point, be added, and of course, you can use direct messages, which will be relatively secure.
