General Information
Age: 27
Species: Red Fox
Size: Large
Physical Description
Alwyn is a large, young, muscular red fox with green eyes of a typical coloring being the mixture of his mother’s darker fur and his father’s lighter fur, with a white-tipped tail. He has, at present, no visible scars or other injuries, and seems to be a picture of complete health especially compared to his much more battle-hardened parents.
On duty in the Stoatorian Guard as a bodyguard, he can typically be found wearing the full formal half-plate armor with full arm and hand protection with a red-plumed morion helmet, and brigandine leggings and boots to allow for increased day-to-day and marching mobility while still providing adequate protection, along with the ceremonial red knee-high cloak. He carries around a poleaxe as his primary weapon, designed for both crowd control and individual combat against heavily armored opponents in wider areas, while having a custom basket-hilted broadsword (schiavona) with a very tapered point for more enclosed areas and as a side-arm.
Off-duty for regular wear where he still might encounter combat, he tends to wear only a plate curaiss with brigandine for the rest of his body, keeping his morion for his helmet but without the plume, and sometimes eschewing it depending on the situation.
In casual situations where he is not expecting combat, he tends to wear a form-fitting tan leather coat with a clot shirt and pants, leather gloves, and leather boots, with a black belt and gold buckle where he usually keeps his broadsword in a scabbard.
Inventory and Real Estate
In addition to the above equipment, Alwyn keeps a pendant of his granduncle Alexei on him, whom in many aspects he considers his real father, along with a pendant of the Empress’s kits with whom he is very close as he was their personal bodyguard for quite some time.
He technically has the right as heir to the Dukedom of Westisle to the partial ownership of all the Ryalor properties, but tends to eschew this to live in the Stoatorian Guard barracks, or to find some other accommodation with his family stipend or Guard salary. While rejecting the attempted gifts of his parents to give him some landed property of his own, he did accept a gift of a small vineyard from the Empress for his service outside of Amarone, in which he has a few tenants and servants and makes a modest income out of.
Personality
Alwyn is known to most, unlike his father, to be a very warm, friendly, and extroverted individual, always there for his friends and compatriots. He is particularly known for his love of alcohol, parties, gambling, pranks, vixens, and generally playing around, finding fights, and risk-taking behavior. In this aspect he takes much more after his mother’s side of the family, while taking after his father’s side in melee combat. He is particularly good with kits and loves to play around with them, giving them piggyback rides, sneaking them sweets, and generally going along with their adventures.
Underneath this exterior, however, one occasionally catches glimpses of a much more complex fox, one who perhaps indulges in much of the above behavior often to the extreme because of self-worth, guilt, and abandonment issues from his kithood, and he seems particularly avoidant when it comes to establishing anything more than a short-term connection with a vixen or the idea of raising his own family one day.
Strengths
Very well-armed and armored compared to much of the Imperium, and knows how to use both to his advantage due to his intense Stoatorian Guard training.
Can handle both crowds and individual melee combat quite well with his weapons and fists and take on foes in all types of armor effectively at close range.
Ryalor family connections often let him get out of a lot of situations that would otherwise land him in serious trouble.
Weaknesses
Does not have much of a response to handling opponents who use ranged weaponry except for attempting to close the distance as fast as possible while using his armor to protect him.
Has effectively been trained to be a bodyguard, and presently has little life experience in any other particular practical skill, making him relatively inflexible.
The Ryalor connection is often a double-edged sword with many disliking or hating him for it or trying to capture him for ransom from his parents.
History
The first kit of Duke Talinn Ryalor and Duchess Dusk Rainblade, Alwyn was born in Storm’s Peak on Westisle in 1738 following the Ryalor exit from the Imperium and Willard Brudenell’s seizure of power. While his father was often quite busy with his governance and thus was unable to spend as much time with him as he wished, he did have a particularly close bond with his mother and especially his granduncle Alexei and the three kits of Vaelora Ryalor who had been rescued from the Imperium. These were, for him, the happiest days of his life, as he had most of his family, new siblings from time to time, the doting of his mother, granduncle, cousins, and rarely his father, and little to no cares in the world.
That all changed at ten years old with the Revolutions of 1748, which saw the entire world, including the Ryalor stronghold of Westisle, thrown into chaos. His father and mother, despite their wishes, had little to no time for the young Alwyn or his siblings and cousins, and indeed out of a fear that they could lose power, separated the close-knit kits from each other so that if one of their strongholds fell, the family line would not be extinguished. Alwyn, luckily, was still able to be around his granduncle Alexei, who began to train him in the traditional Fyadoran martial arts, mentored him in many ways, and told him stories of the family’s Imperial heritage, with the two becoming extremely close.
Everything changed, however, when he was merely sixteen years old in 1754, when his father Talinn, having crushed the remaining resistance to Ryalor rule in Westisle, marshaled most of the House’s military forces and returned to the Imperium during Amélie's coup in what was assumed by both him and his grandfather as a means of seizing the Imperium’s throne, thus adding more to their holdings and finally giving them the means to prepare for a reconquest of Fyador proper to restore their Imperial heritage. So confident was Alexei in this this that he sailed with Alwyn to Bully Harbor at the conclusion of the coup to celebrate and have him coronated as crown prince. Upon their arrival, however, things did not go as planned.
Told to wait in a side room while his father and Alexei discussed business, Alwyn dreamed of everything that his granduncle had told him, how they would restore order and honor to both the Fyador and the Imperium at large. However, much to his discomfort, he began to overhear heated voices, and then yelling between his father and granduncle. Then the sound of clashing steel could be heard, a series of pained yelps, and as he rushed into the room he saw a horrible sight that still plagues him in his dreams: his granduncle cut down with a vicious slash across his chest in a pool of blood, and his father’s leg stabbed with his granduncle’s katana still in it. Rushing over to his granduncle, the one who he raised him first, he managed to comfort him in his last few breaths, with grandfather holding a bloodied paw to his cheeks saying that he loved him as his last words.
Horrified, he turned around to look at his father, who had removed his grandfather’s blade from his leg and stymied the bleeding, and whose personal guard had now entered the room to assist him, and simply asked him “why?”. All Talinn could do was look at his son with a pained expression and shake his head, refusing to answer any questions. Alwyn was then left to handle the corpse of his granduncle and arrange for his burial, as Talinn was summoned back to Amarone the next day. Mortified and in shock, Alwyn did not do much for the next two weeks except lay in his bed, wondering what had gone wrong?
When his father returned, it was announced that Alwyn himself would be going to Amarone, to serve the new Empress to whom his father had pledged their house and their lands. Alwyn was absolutely furious, unleashing all his grief, anger, and rage on his father, calling him a traitor, calling him a kinslayer, giving up all their hopes, ambitions, and dreams, for what? To bow and scrape to another monarch? But despite all his protestations, he was to go, to serve as the “guest”, aka hostage, of the Empress. Cursing his father’s name and wishing that he would never be happy again, the young heir was trudged off to Amarone to begin his new life there.
Initially, Alwyn remained sullen in the Imperial Palace, rarely leaving his room, and, some think, engaging in something of a hunger strike to protest his treatment, until one day the Empress “invited” him to have meals with her. Forced to attend, he said nothing on their first occasion, barely even looking at her, while she simply looked at him kindly. Over time, however, his walls eventually began to crack, if only because of it being the only escape he had from the monotonous boredom of being stuck in his room, and he and the Empress began to talk, formally at first, but then at greater length. He found that, contrary to his expectations, she was actually quite a pleasant, honest, intelligent, and formidable vixen, not haughty, authoritarian, or out-of-touch at all, and, in the absence of Dusk, took on something like a nurturing mother figure to him.
As they grew closer, more privileges were allowed to him, and he was even able to ask questions about what had happened with his father to bring some sort of closure to his granduncle’s death. Although the Empress was light on details, she did comfort and reassure him that one day he would understand that it was ultimately the best course for both the Imperium and his house that such an agreement had been reached, and promised that when the time was right, she would tell him everything, and, having always been honest with him as far as he could tell, this was enough for him for now.
To his surprise, he was offered the ability to join her reformed Stoatorian Guard, which he readily accepted, undergoing intense training with veterans of the Imperial Civil War in both the poleaxe, broadsword, and hand to hand combat as well as other bodyguard techniques, and learning how to fight and move in all various kinds of armor, something he took to with a gusto as he felt that, in many ways, it was honoring his granduncle’s desire for him to become a warrior.
During this time, much to his surprise, the Empress gave birth to three kits from an unknown father or fathers, who she personally assigned him as a bodyguard to when he was not engaged in his vigorous training. They seemed to immediately form a close, natural bond with each other, and Alwyn was, much to the surprise of many, extremely protective of them not only physically, but even as a nanny, making sure they were clean, well-fed, played with, and entertained, often giving them piggyback rides in much the same way his granduncle had given him, and this affection seemed reciprocated, with them calling him “brother”, something which he kept very close to his heart.
Of course, Alwyn could not always be there, as he had to engage in real combat as well. Although the Empress’s reign had by and large been peaceful, the younger members of the Guard were occasionally sent out to deal with various brigands and pirates to gain practical combat experience, and Alwyn proved to be his father’s son in that regard, much as he would hate to admit it. By 1764, not only had he undergone extensive training by veterans of the civil war, he had more than a few campaigns under his belt.
As of 1765, he is currently serving both as a bodyguard and an officer-in-training, most recently at Tully Shore but recently receiving orders to report to the Minister of War at Bully Harbor.
