DESCRIPTION:

Sporting a dark brown pelt with creamy white underside, Rhana appears as an ordinary stoat, with sharp features and bristling whiskers, but no scars or markings to particularly differentiate her from the rest of her kind. As a recruit of the Imperial Army, she is most often seen in a green military uniform, otherwise dressing plainly and practically for life around the harbour.

BIOGRAPHY:

Rhana was born in the leadup to the years of civil war, part of a large family living in the northern, marshy town of Merscower, on the road to Marquistry Cape. Unbeknownst to the locals, her father, Raden Sidrig Reddflank, had once been a leader of the feared anarchist movement known as Maelstrom, having faked his own death in a last final mission in the late 1730s, running off with a fellow radical, a stoatmaid who’d served as the mission’s explosives expert. Living under different names, they’d settled down in the town, and lived a peaceful enough life, having several kits, of which Rhana was the last.

The collapse and outbreak of civil war in 1748 brought Raden back into Maelstrom, taking his entire family with him into the organization. Family life gave way to the needs of the cause, with Rhana’s parents and eldest siblings taking part in the fighting directly while she was largely left to others within Maelstrom for caretaking.

Rhana was too young to remember most of the war, which for Maelstrom largely devolved into chaotic skirmishes and partisan attacks after the bulk of their frontline forces were either defeated or cast aside by their supposed allies. It was never clear how many of her siblings survived the war, if any, or what became of her parents. By war’s end she was under the care of a small group of Maelstrom survivors, possibly the sole survivor in her family. She knew her name meant something to them, and knew the cause went hand in hand with it, and so for years the kit made that her life, learning to read and write for the purposes of distributing propaganda, helping to mend wounds and eventually taking part in street brawls when the group finally made its way down to Bully Harbor.

The city’s impact on her was twofold, however. First, it hardened her ideals – seeing the influx of meek, servile ‘woodlanders’ as an Imperial ploy to dispossess its vermin population and put out their firey spirit, and also believing the slowly resurgent vulpine supremacist movement to be the hand of the new power in Amarone, a tool to divide and rule. But the harbor was also a distraction. As the city rebuilt, some of her cohort – her adoptive family, in a way – began to forsake their cause, fading into civilian life with time and age, while Rhana herself grew more and more radical.

By the time she’d grown into adulthood, the stoat found herself very much alone, and starting to attract the wrong kind of attention from forces both legal and illicit within the city. With secret, shallow fantasies of inspiring revolution, or exacting revenge on officers and statesbeasts - but more out of desperation than a proper plan, she now finds herself considering the unthinkable – joining the army of the state. Time will tell how it turns out for her.

POSSESSIONS:

Not much but that which the Imperial Army provides for her.
