PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
Dr. Camilla Volsci is a lanky cinnamon ferret whose fur is going bit gray at the edges as age catches up with her. She regularly dresses in simple, monocolor blouses and loose pants that can be easily washed to remove the blood and viscera that comes with her job. On top of this she wears her white doctor's coat, an affectation she keeps with pride given the many challenges she faced in reaching that rank. She frequently has dark circles under her brown eyes from sleep deprivation.

PERSONALITY:
Camilla is, among the staff of Pyrostoat, one of the more stable and well-liked doctors, largely for her good bedside manner with patients. She is generally empathetic and understanding to those under her care, a quality she does not always have the patience to extend to hospital administration, whose rules and red tape become her frequent nemesis. With her fellow physicians and the nurses, she tends toward a 'tough but fair' approach, extending more grace to the tired and overworked nurses and physician's assistants working hard to learn the job than she does to her fellow doctors, whom she will readily snap at in instances when they should really know better.

HISTORY:

Camilla Volsci is the last member of a fallen house of landed gentry. Her father, the late Earl of Wilbumshire, was a well-meaning but ineffectual man who lacked the discipline or temperament to rescue his house from financial collapse, especially after the early death of his beloved wife left him the sole parent of their daughter Camilla. With her father often too absorbed in his studies to focus on Camilla, the young jill grew up willful and wild, roaming freely over the countryside surrounding their estate in search of adventures. The one point of shared interest that was able to bond father and daughter was a mutual interest in herbology and the apothecarial sciences, which Camilla delved into with great interest.

Eventually, as she came of age and with the house teetering on the brink of ruin, Camilla's father reluctantly reached out to his remaining contacts to see if anyone would be willing to take his daughter's paw in marriage, so that she might be provided for better than what he could give to her. The Shipmans, a nouveau-rich mercantile family, leaped on the opportunity since their son, Johas, had just completed his medical degree at the University of Length and was, in their view, desperately in need of a femme's touch to smooth out his rough edges. Camilla was furious when her father told her that she was to be married off, given away like mere property, but she reluctantly bore with it at her father's request. The pair only met each other at the altar, and, after a brief and somewhat cheerless wedding, Camilla was taken to live in Dr. J.L. Shipman's house in Zann's Backyard in Bully Harbor.

Initially Dr. Shipman regarded Camilla with a mixture of revulsion and resentment at being forced to cohabitate with this strange creature called 'a wife', tempered with a bit of professional curiosity at what medical mysteries might be unlocked if subjected to experimentation. Camilla, for her part, was horrified by her new husband's predeliction for dissecting and preserving cadavers in an attempt to better understand the anatomy of various species, and found his many quirks, which included an obsessive fastidiousness, an obsession with miasma theory that led him to compulsively hold his breath whenever anyone entered his personal space, and an entirely misguided (in her view) belief that the body held all the tools necessary to heal itself when properly stimulated and herbal remedies were just quackery at best, to be unendingly infuriating to his new wife. After much back and forth in which the pair attempted to sabotage each others' research, their disagreements culminated in Dr. Shipman attempting to flee into naval service aboard the BlackShip, only for Camilla to chase after him, determined to prevent him from victimizing anyone with his misguided medical theories.

The pair served together reluctantly aboard the BlackShip for a number of months, with Camilla married to Dr. Shipman in name only while slowly developing a mutual attraction to the ship's captain Karath Nicolas. After Karath left for a position as Minister of Misanthropy, the Shipmans both retired into shore life, settling on an agreement on how to split the house between them and keep out of each other's business. By this point Camilla's father had passed away, and she had nowhere else to go, her family's estate being swallowed by creditors, so she settled into a position as a physician's assistant at Pyrostoat Memorial Hospital. There she became fast friends with Dr. Julia Freedom and with Alina Vasin, a fellow crewbeast from the BlackShip also turned nurse.

One night, Camilla and Alina spotted a pair of beasts wheeling a patient out of a room and out of the hospital. Following them, they tracked them back to the Shipman Manor, where they discovered, to their horror, that Dr. Shipman and a co-conspirator with similarly unethical tendencies were dissecting a living beast. Camilla and Alina set fire to the grisly lab and, at Camilla's urging, fled to the Ministry of Misanthropy to enter witness protection against Dr. Shipman. Shipman, for his part, vanished soon after, though rumors persisted of him being involved in unethical studies on behalf of the Ministry of Innovation thereafter.

With the outbreak of the Imperial Civil War (and the finalization of her divorce from Dr. Shipman), Camilla dedicated herself to nursing, joining up with the medical corps to help treat injured soldiers. Through the years of fighting she was there patching up soldiers from both the Ministerial and Loyalist forces, earning the respect of many who would go on to be her future colleagues at Pyrostoat. After the war, she enrolled at the University of Length in an accelerated program for veterans of the civil war, earning her medical degree and soon after joining the staff of Pyrostoat as a doctor. She has been working there ever since.

STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES:
Camilla is a veteran of battlefields, the raging seas, and many an emergency room, which has left her unshakable in the face of chaos. It has also left her, though she wouldn't admit it, a bit lonely. At this point the staff at the hospital are the closest thing she has to family, and for that reason she most often sleeps at the hospital rather than go back to the rarely-used apartment she rents in the Trenches. She has an over-reliance on prescribing plant-based remedies based on the apothecarial studies she grew up learning, and has a skepticism towards (bordering on aversion to) surgical remedies largely thanks to trauma from her ex-husband's practices. While she would never say so, losing so many of her friends over the years - Julia, Alina, Karath - has taken its toll on her, and she hesitates to get close to others again, lest she be forced to relive the pain of losing them too.
