Physical Description

A tall, dignified old fox with splotchy orange, gray, white and black fur, covered in old battle scars. He has piercing green eyes, his right one behind a silver-rimmed monocle, and uses a whale ivory-pommeled cane on account of a slight limp to his right leg.

He wears his Imperial Colonel's uniform always, beneath an old stone-gray cloak with a silver chain, and has an air that demands respect. He wears numerous medals detailing his various efforts for M.A.U.L. and the Imperial Army, including a ribbon signifying his status as a veteran of the Winter War and an old iron medal of a snarling marten head with three suns beneath, a medal signifying his status as a colonel of his old homeland from many years ago.

The statue is dedicated to the fallen heroes of the Winter War, and among those listed are Minister Nuori Sken, Minister Marquo L. Senderjay, Admiral Mackenroe V. Rokford, Captain Kaiea Malikus, Surgeon's Mate Vivian Snow, and several MAUL agents Jere had worked with at the time.

Personality
Warm to his friends, but generally stern, serious, world-weary and battle-hardened. Prone to being lost in thoughts of the past.

Strengths

His love for the Imperium and its citizens, his trust in his own abilities, his experience.

Weaknesses
His dependence on painkillers, his nationalism, his unhealed trauma and old wounds.

History

He was born Gellus Taïrr to a soldiering family in Mesmeros, an isle nation in the West, on Macabre 30th, 1708. In 1725, he was made the youngest colonel in Mesmerene military history in 1725, following his successful leadership in two wars, first as a lieutenant, then a captain. Much of his family pledged support to the forces behind a failed coup of the state, and Jere helped them flee.

When found out, he was arrested and forced to resign his post in 1727. He spent a year in a military prison, and with the help of his aunt Nurtuna, a ship's captain and scoundrel, fled captivity, reaching Bully Harbor in 1728.

He called himself "The Colonel", and joined the Imperial Navy aboard the Golden Hide while making gilders on the side as a hired killer.

His more discreet actions attracted the notice of the Ministry of Misanthropy. They found him out, and offered him the choice of either arrest or joining the ranks of M.A.U.L. to use his talents to the benefit of the Imperium. He joined M.A.U.L.

By 1730, he had learned much of the ways and language of his new home of Bully Harbor and the Imperium, and came to love it. In honor of it, he adopted a new name- Harvon Marcellus Jere, after the Marcellus Military Cemetery and the word "Harbinger", and worked to abandon his old accent and streak for what little mischief was considered inappropriate by M.A.U.L. standards. Some months after, he left the Navy to dedicate himself full-time to M.A.U.L. and the Ministry of Misanthropy, and took up residence first in the Slups, then the Imperial Condos when they upped his salary.

By 1731, he'd proven himself a respectable M.A.U.L. agent with a bright future in the shadowy organization.

In 1732, he participated in several operations against Maelstrom, and earned a special dislike for Raden S. Reddflank, one of Maelstrom's leaders.

By 1733, his dislike of Reddflank turned to outright hatred as he laid much blame for the horrors of the Winter War upon Reddflank and his organization, whom the fox considered murderers and traitors.

He survived the Winter War through 1734 fighting viciously alongside other MAUL agents and under the leadership of MinoWar Nuori Sken and others, and is haunted by the ordeal like no other conflict.

He led a hunt for Reddflank that resulted in the stoat's capture and delivery to the Ministries, and was told by some in the know that the stoat was sent on a suicide mission for punishment. Jere would've preferred public execution or killing Reddflank himself, just to be sure.

In 1740, Jere returned to his homeland of Mesmeros for a time, where his sister had since become among those in power, seeking reconnection with his family and homeland.

In 1742, Jere returned to the Imperium, where he changed careers and joined the Imperial Army. He was made a captain for his efforts during the Maelstrom Uprising and the Winter War, and rose to the rank of Major during his attempts to maintain order (and raid woodlander food stores) while stationed in Pricklee Point during the Infamous Revolutions of 1748.

He returned to Bully Harbor in 1751, and during the First Civil War was made Colonel while fighting for the Ministerial Army against the Monarchist and Republican forces.

When black powder was discovered, Jere acknowledged its potential for military efforts and was among the first to approve its useage in combat.

During the Second Civil War, he remained on the side of the Ministers, and aided in the defense of Bully Harbor against the forces of the would-be Empress Amélie. He formally surrendered following the capitulation of Talinn Ryalor to Amélie's demands and the subsequent brutal battle between their forces and those of the Ministers. Upon surrendering his sabre to the opposition, he told them thus: that he did not fight in opposition of Amélie, whom in some respects he admired; but on the side of the Imperium.

Following Amélie's ascension to the throne in 1753, he pledged fealty to the Empress and has since faithfully served her following his reinstatement to Colonel, grateful for the peace the new order brought. Like many, however, he considers Talinn Ryalor a no-good traitor.

Of all Amélie's decisions, he has embraced her implementation of artillery the most, and is of the opinion it should be even more widespread in Imperial useage; that it could usher a new era of Imperial glory and power.

From 1753-1756, he worked to rebuild the military and maintain peace throughout the Imperium.

In 1756, Jere submitted a formal request to be stationed again at Pricklee Point and lead a battalion there. The request was granted, and he personally chose the XVIII Battalion, some members of whom he fought alongside during the First and Second Civil Wars, including in defense of Bully Harbor against the forces of Amélie.

As part of this decision, he had the whole battalion swear again absolute loyalty to Empress Amélie and to the Imperium.

Since commanding the battalion at Pricklee Point, he spends his time there keeping the woodlanders in line and ensuring prized resources such as lumber continue to be sent elsewhere in the Imperium, as well as experimenting with his own ideas for the Imperial military.

Jere drills the XVIII Battalion endlessly, keeping them combat-ready and ensuring that his artillery units, the pride of his battalion, are especially at the peak of their abilities. He has also since sent a company elsewhere in order to hire a company of mercenaries (consisting of cross foxes, yellow-throated martens, and brownrats, one cross fox being his niece, Reia Taïrr) from his homeland of Mesmeros to replace them. With the mercenaries, he hopes to reconnect with his niece Reia and their homeland, and combine the might of the Imperium with the cunning, prowess, strictness, and bloodthirst of the Mesmerenes.

When he is not at Pricklee Point, he is in Bully Harbor either performing the less rigorous duties expected of his station, from wagging tongues with government officials to inspections of Army troops, ships and supplies, or resting at his home in the northern portion of Zann's Backyard, a small manse where he maintains on his property a garden, a library, and a humble statue dedicated to the fallen Imperial heroes of the Winter War.
