DESCRIPTION:
Were he not stark white and resplendently fluffy (as is befitting a proper pine marten) with red, bespectacled eyes, the albino pine marten would not stand out in a crowd. However, Caden does not have the privilege of blending in most places he frequents, much to his lifelong chagrin. At one point in his adolescence he even experimented with dyeing his fur, but the results were even worse than simply living as a handsome, white beacon of lithe fluff. He is passingly handsome with a notch cut from his left ear that makes him appear roguish and perhaps even alluring, though the near-perpetual resting scowl on his somewhat weathered face could cause him to be less approachable to many. When a smile does light his expression, however, the marten looks far younger than his nearly four decades, which could be considered unsettling in certain circumstances--especially if one is at the business end of his broadsword.
He tends to wear practical clothing for the weather and his activities, though anybeast with an eye for quality would see that the marten does spare any expense in his clothing choices. His formal wear is simple and streamlined, not taken to elaborate statements, but rather allowing the minimalist aesthetic to accentuate his in-born unique appearance and his athletic build that tells of a lifetime of honing his physical capabilities.
BIOGRAPHY:
Caden was born to then-Admiral Nuori Sken and Mayor Gordon Freemont in Bully Harbor on Humidor 29, 1726. His life rapidly changed when he was barely toddling about as death came swiftly to his home at the paws of IceRain Sleet, Minister of War, who slew his father for the crime of plotting to overthrow the Emperor. From that time forward, Caden's life had no foundational security. His mother, eventually rising to the rank of Minister of War, devolved into madness (a trait seemingly required for the Ministry position at the time) before being killed in a duel with the Minister of Misanthropy Vladimir Ullyanov as she sought to protect the throne from Ullyanov's ambition. Caden was passed from caretaker to caretaker over the years, learning that he could only find temporary stability with anybeast before his life shifted again. His mother miraculously returned from the dead, only to be definitively destroyed during the Winter War by her own wild schemes to save the Imperium. The young marten learned he must look after himself if he was to survive. He was trained to fight by numerous adult beasts whose care he found himself under, though the did not definitively learn how to find stability in the love and care of any attachment figures.
Though he was taken in and cared for by a variety of beasts after the Winter War, when he came of age, Caden was quick to create a new life for himself. He befriended the todd, Sebastian Solemarch, and the two became fast friends traversing first Vulpinsula and then further into the wide world, joining mercenary crews and learning the trade of the sellsword. Caden found the life to fit his personality and skillset well, and he thrived. However, after a decade and a half at the work, he found himself becoming disillusioned with always chasing the next job and fighting the battles of another simply for some coin--albeit at that point he was making quite a bit of coin with each job he took, given his reputation, proficiency, and the crew he had built alongside Sebastian.
Over the years he had many short romances and dalliances with those he met during his travels. But it was the handsome, lute-playing, smooth-voiced pine marten on the stage at a tavern in Varangia who turned Caden from a cutthroat mercenary captain to somebeast who simply wished to settle down on a farm and raise a family. The five years with Einar were the most peaceful and content Caden had ever experienced. Einar had a child from his late wife, and Caden unexpectedly found himself thrust into a parental role, which he took to better than he could have imagined. He and the twelve year old Asta became fast friends as he tried to give the young girl the care, stability, and security he never had as a child.
His past eventually found him, however. Sold out by Sebastian to a vengeful past-target of their mercenary activities, Caden returned home one evening to find Einar slain and Asta missing, with a message left in the desecrated home that told Caden he could exchange his life for hers. Needless to say, the plan did not work out for those beasts who sought to capture Caden. He would have made his bloodthirsty, mad mother proud that night, were she anything more than dust and some letters etched into a memorial in Bully Harbor.
With a rescued Asta, a shattered heart and life, betrayed by his best friend, and knowing he was now a marked beast, the pine marten fled Varangia. While he seethed for revenge, it was his responsibility to his murdered partner's daughter that took him far across the sea to a place he had sworn he would never return, a place where he hoped none would look for him. For who would expect a beast who had become as recognized and distinguished as him to go to a place as filth-ridden and unstable as the Vulpine Imperium?
