General Information
Age: 17
Species: Pine Marten
Size: a bit scruffy and scrawny for his age

Physical Description
Aran Mateu, as he's commonly called, is a young, scruffy pine marten with resentful eyes and a chip on his shoulder. His fur is the dark brown common to pine martens of Miklarian heritage, as well as dark eyes of a near uniform black. He typically wears a nicely tailored shirt in the Alkamarian style, buttons up the side, and equally well-tailored pants of the same style, though he typically throws a durable raincoat overtop to partially obscure the style.
Inventory and Real Estate
-Clothing largely in a mix of Alkamarian and Vulpinsulan styles
-A ganive (a traditional Miklarian-style dagger) and a tipal (a thick stick designed for blocking blows)
-A small sewing kit for patching up clothes
Personality
Aran Mateu comes across to most, including his friends, as an angry and resentful young lad. Having immigrated to the VI at a young age from a land long hostile to it, his treatment by his Imperial-born peers has left him isolated and suspicious. He still holds a strong Miklarian identity, one his parents would rather he suppress, and refuses to accept Vulpinsulan culture as inherently superior.

Strengths
Aran Mateu is a skilled knife fighter with a style that isn't commonly seen in the Imperium, which gives him a small edge in defending himself from those who would enact retributory violence upon him for his heritage. Being well-learned in his culture also gives him a unique perspective and insight, especially as relations between the Imperium and Alkamar grow cold once more. His training as an apprentice to his father, a fine tailor, at least gives him a future in Bully Harbor.

Weaknesses
Aran Mateu doesn't know when to back down and remain silent. Though he hates Alkamar with a burning passion, he can't stand to hear the Milkarian people denigrated even in passing or by lumping them together with the Alkamarians. His refusal to acclimate to Imperial culture has also earned him no end of grief.
History

Aran Mateu was born in the Oldein Mountains on the large island of Alkamar, in a town home to and descended from Miklarian independence fighters, though the government in Alkamar would rather brand them as 'separatists' and 'rebels'. In 1755, during a nadir in Alkamarian control over the region, the Miklarian freedom fighters, including Aran Mateu's parents, launched a full revolt against the Alkamarian crown. This revolt actually grew large enough to prompt a new power-sharing arrangement between the Miklarian thanes and the wealthy dons who formed a noveau-bourgeoise, but at the cost of the Thanes surrendering up all the instigators of the revolt for judgment by the Alkamarian crown. Most were rounded up by the Thanes' supporters before they even knew they'd been sold out; Aran Mateu and his parents only escaped because his father acted on an ill-omened dream which he interpreted as a warning of betrayal.

The family fled across the ocean to the Vulpine Imperium, settling themselves in Bully Harbor just as the reign of the new empress was declared. The Jan Vidal family made themselves model immigrants, opening a tailoring business which did well enough that they could move into a shop in the Trenches while doing house calls all through Zann's Backyard and the Insanely Rich Area. While his parents tried to accept their lot in life and forget Miklar, though, Aran Mateu never did, nor has he forgiven anyone in the new government of Alkamar for their complicity in his exile. He's determined to prove himself and, by proxy, Miklar to be of value, and hopes to one day return and give Miklar the freedom it has long been denied.
